Hardegg castle rises proudly from the center of a narrow basin.
It was already a derelict ruin before it was rebuilt under Duke Johann Karl Klevenhüller Metsch at the end of the 19th century. The weapons and mementoes from the era of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, whose companion Duke Johann Karl had been, disappeared unfortunately in the aftermath of the war in 1945. Today only a small exhibition dedicated to Maximilian of Mexico remains.
